The full story..
I've lived in Sudbury my whole life and developed a love of photography from a young age thanks to my dad. He was always taking photos of my brother and I (I have a bin of about a thousand printed photos to prove it!) and I quickly began wanting to take photos myself.
In high school, I was delighted to discover that I was able to take a photography class. My mom purchased my first DSLR - a Nikon D3000 and it really lit that fire to capture anything and everything. I became intrigued specifically with photojournalism. I loved the idea of capturing a moment without interfering.
That led me to enrol in the Journalism course at Cambrian college. Unfortunately it didn't live up to my expectations and I decided to drop it. For years my camera sat collecting dust as I tried to figure out what to do with my life, working as a server for the time being.
Then Meg walked into my life. We quickly became close friends while she was expecting her first daughter. After she was born, Meg expressed to me her desire to become a doula. At the time, I had no idea what on Earth that was! In the simplest terms, a doula is a support person for pregnancy, labour, and postpartum. They are specifically trained to meet the emotional, physical, and educational needs of someone who is expecting. I thought it was amazing and I cheered her on as she completed her DONA training and started her own business.
When I found out I was expecting my daughter Everly, Meg offered to be there for me and boy was she ever! In so many more ways than I could properly explain. I realized everyone deserves support like that!
I began expressing interest in becoming a doula myself and Meg happily welcomed me to join her business. I completed my doula training and certification through DONA International and attended my first few births.
For each birth I attended, I brought along my camera and snapped a few photos. It wasn't long before I saw my love of photography and knowledge of the birth proceess become a passion for documenting birth stories. I have no doubt that birth photography is what I was made to do and I thank Meg everyday for helping me find this beautiful path.
